McHale would use several people from 'Adventure Time' to come work on the miniseries. McHale initially envisioned eighteen chapters, but eventually settled on ten to accommodate for budget, time, and scheduling constraints. After the release of the pilot, Cartoon Network ordered a miniseries from McHale leaving the number of episodes to his discretion. The very same night it was screened at the LA Shorts Fest before making its way to other film festivals. Cartoon Network would release 'Tome of the Unknown: Harvest Melody' through its website on September 9, 2013. They discover the boneless children living in the basement and with their help they defeat Mr. Whittles, a guy who carves ivory, only the "ivory" is from the teeth and bones of the children he kidnaps. Another episode idea would've had them meet Mr. The only way he's able to defeat her is by putting salt and pepper on her discarded skin, so when she goes to try and put it back on, she gets burned. Wirt eventually discovers that the witch is one of the people in a small Puritan-like town.but as soon as he does, she returns home and catches him. "Nightmare" was an episode idea that started innocently enough with the boys sleeping when a horrible skinless witch comes and rides Greg off into the darkness like a horse. One of the original episode ideas was actually pretty dark. Originally Beatrice would actually be working with the Woodsman. Including the pilot episode, there were originally 11 episodes of the miniseries.

The Woodsman's role actually shifted a few times in development from being an agent of Old Scratch to the sole villain, and then finally a misunderstood tragic wanderer manipulated by evil forces but striving for redemption. He also put more emphasis on the two secondary characters: the Woodsman and Beatrice.

In 2010 McHale would update his original 2006 pilot pitch for 'Tome of the Unknown'. Party Pat, the fedora-and-cardigan wearing leader of the Party Bears in the season 2 episode "Belly of the Beast." One of the characters was even directly inspired by McHale. Characters on 'Adventure Time' were actually created or cocreated by McHale such as the Lich and BMO (a holdover from the 'Space Planet' pilot). However while trying to work on the project and doing work on 'The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack', McHale would join 'Flapjack' veteran Pendleton Ward on his new show for Cartoon Network 'Adventure Time' as a creative director on the first two seasons of the show. McHale found this difficult to do and decided to instead focus his time on 'Space Planet'. Cartoon Network was interested in both of McHale's proposals but while 'Space Planet' would still be a short, they asked that 'Tome of the Unknown' be restructured as a motion picture. The landscape is never-ending and always changing, but usually has the feel of either Colonial-to-Victorian New England or a German countryside." Culturally it is a mixture of American folklore, classic fairy tales, ghost stories, and dreamland. McHale described the Land of the In-Between (the early name for the Unknown) as "the place between life and death, dreams and reality. Beatrice also makes her appearance in this pitch in much the same way as she would do in the later miniseries. Walter is initially against it, but adds his signature when he realizes Gregory has already added his. But if they fail, they'll be whisked away to "live in the dark kingdom forever". The boys then wander the forest where they encounter a devil named Old Scratch who tricks Gregory into a Faustian deal: Scratch promises to return the two of them home if they read a book of forgotten stories-the Tome of the Unknown.

When the boys see the conductor of the train remove his face to reveal a skeleton, the two jump from the train mid-journey. In this pitch, Wirt was given the name, Walter and the two half brothers accidentally board a train for the afterlife. The original pitch for 'Tome of the Unknown' contained the loose premise of 'Over the Garden Wall' but did have some key differences. One was entitled 'Space Planet', a quirky cosmic opera with deeper philosophical themes while the other was 'Tome of the Unknown', the original title for the pilot episode of what would later become 'Over the Garden Wall'. At that time, he pitched two projects to Cartoon Network. Did You Know? Patrick McHale actually created 'Over the Garden Wall' as early as 2006.
